Susie Self

Susie Self

Susie studied voice with Josephine Veasy and composition with Stephen Dodgson at the Royal College of Music. She won scholarships from the Royal Society of Arts to study with Sena Jurinac and from the Banff Centre, Canada to study with John Cage.

Last year she sang Ma Moss in Copland’s “The Tender Land” for Lyon Opera and this year she sings La Padrona in "Der Turm" for Luxembourg Opera.

Other roles include
Mistress Quickly in “Falstaff” in Salzburg.
Mrs Grose in Santiago, Chile.
Baba the Turk in “The Rakes Progress” for Lisbon Opera.
3rd Secretary in “Nixon in China” for the Greek National Opera.
Madame de la Haltière in “Cendrillon” for Opera du Rhin in Strasbourg
Marie in “Der Fliegende Holländer” and Emilia in “Otello” for the Vlaamse Opera.

She has sung as a soloist many times with the Flemish Philharmonic in Brussels including Mahler’s 3rd Symphony, Glass’s Peace Symphony and Verdi’s Requiem.

She played Katisha in “The Mikado” at the Savoy Theatre for D’Oyly Carte.

 

In recent years Susie understudied for Opera North (Mrs Sedley in “Peter Grimes”), The Royal Opera (Magdalone in “Maskarade”, Aksinya in “Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk” and Brigitta in “Die Tote Stadt) and Glyndebourne (Ježibaba in “Rusalka).

Last Autumn she gave a lunchtime Recital for The Royal Opera and sang St Ethedreda, a new Cantata by Tim Watts in Ely Cathedral.

As a composer she composed for The Royal Opera House’s “Garden Venture”. Her opera HEROIC WOMEN featured on Radio 3 and toured to Taiwan, California, Mexico and London. Her second symphony is recorded by The Moravian Philharmonic with  George Vass conducting.
Commissions include: “Magnificat” for The Arts Council, “EIS” for Brigittenau Conservatoire , Vienna, “Sheela–na-gig” for “Sounds Positive” and Carrick-A-Rede for “Saxology”. She has just been awarded a commission from The Ralph Vaughan Willams Trust.

Susie co-directs Selfmade Music with her cellist/composer husband Michael Christie and is visiting professor of voice and composition at Junior Guildhall. She is Music Director of North Norfolk Opera and will conduct Albert Herring this spring at Britten’s old school, Gresham's. www.selfmademusic.co.uk
